RARE 1950 PHOTO ~ CARLISLE INDIAN SCHOOL & OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL HERO JIM THORPE

Description

For your consideration is an uncommon and rarely seen 70 year old Associated Press photograph of former Sports Hero and Olympic legend Jim Thorpe together with his son Corporal Carl Phillip Thorpe in 1950. They were in Washington DC to attend a dinner to honor Jim as "The All-Time All-American."
Thorpe Sr., a member of the Sac & Fox Nation, attended Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania where he
excelled in Football, Track & Field, baseball and overall athletics.
His exceptional sports accomplishments brought great honor to the school, to the Sac & Fox Nation and to Native American people in general,
In 1912 Jim Thorpe represented the United States in the Stockholm Olympics and won gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon thus extending the pride of association with this remarkable athlete to our entire country.  Unfortunately, his titles were vacated by the International Olympic Committee and his medals confiscated when they determined that he violated their amateurism rules. In 1983 the committee restored his titles and medals but it was 30 years after his death so he never regained the moment of honor he had lost. After the olympics Thorpe became a member of the New York Giants baseball team in 1913 and continued his storied career in sports. He subsequently played football for the Canton Bulldogs in 1915 and multiple teams in the National Football League from 1920 to 1928. He even participated in basketball briefly. He passed away in March 1953, three years after this photograph was taken. The honor of being named "The Greatest Athlete of the first 50 Years of the Twentieth Century" remain.
Thorpe, the proud father, is seen here with his arm around Carl at the dinner on January 8. Carl enlisted in the US Army in 1944 and rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel in his very distinguished 30 years military career. He served in WW II, Korean War and Vietnam. He died in 1986.
The photograph measures 9 1/2 x 5 1/2. The back of the photograph has referenced notations made by Associated Press. They included his living status in red (Dead) to his left in front & in rear. The 20/20 Hindsight is NOT on the photograph, only on this eBay scan. Otherwise the photo is in very good condition. It has been in my extensive Thorpe collection for over twenty-five years. This is not a recent copy.

I've been a collector of photographs, important documents and publications related to Native American history for over 35 years. I am not a commercial dealer. My collection mainly covers the period from early 1700's to 1930. The images (all original) are of various sizes and have been safely stored in archival museum boxes in a climate controlled setting and are in the same condition as when I acquired them....  Please let me know if you are searching for anything in particular and I will be happy to check and place them on eBay if available.
