    Description

-->  US Navy WWII 13th Aviation Utility Squadron VJ-13 Unit History Book
-->  This is the original official unit history book of VJ-13, the 13th Aviation Utility Squadron of the US Navy.  They were an extremely obscure unit, and I cannot find any information about them on the Internet. Looking at the book, it appears that they were a jack-of-all-trades outfit.  They flew a wide range of aircraft during the war, including the JM-1 (naval version of the Martin B-26), the SBD Dauntless, the SNJ (Naval version of the T-6 trainer), the PBY-5 Catalina, the JRF-5 (Grumman Goose), the B-24 bomber, the Grumman Wildcat, the Grumman Avenger, and the JRC-1 (Navy version of the Cessna AT-17 Bobcat "Bamboo Bomber" trainer), and several more. They could fly any of these aircraft at any particular moment, depending on the needs of the service. Their wartime service began on the west coast of the United States, and later across the Pacific to Guadalcanal and eventually the Philippine Islands.
--> What the squadron did is something of a mystery, but their official logo (see color picture) shows a flying rooster clutching a camera, a bomb, and a machine gun, all of this while hauling a target sleeve behind his tail.  The squadron did a lot of target towing for aerial gunnery work. They may have also done a lot of ferry work, taking various aircraft from one place to another.  NOTE - the color artwork showing their flying rooster takes up an entire page.
-->  The book is hardback, with no dust jacket.  It was published by Frye & Smith, Ltd. of San Diego, California at the end of the war.
